NISYROS:
MORPHOLOGY - VOLCANO
The bigger part of the island is mountainous, constituted from volcanic
rocks and elations of volumes, that were created by the activity of the
volcano long time ago and shaped the valley of Lakki, craters and the
mountains Profetes Elias (698m.), Agios Ioannis (588m.) and Agios Georgios
(519m.). The Geological and tectonic structure of Nisyros encourages the
presence of hot springs, that are used for therapeutic aims (iamatika
loutra). Also the geomorphology of the region and the volcanic structure
of rocks on the island, has encouraged the mining, as kaolin, sulphur
and especially pumice and perlite, that is still profitable. Within the
natural environment of Nisyros is also the rich flora and fauna, for which
specialists have pronounced its uniqueness. Known kao, coveted since antiquity,
was also used for making millstones, and was called Stone Nisyritis. The
most characteristic new morphological element of Nisyros is the volcano
that constitutes today the most important motive of visitors. This Islands
uniqueness and its special natural beauty, beyond the scientific interest,
renders it worth a visit. The volcanoÕs existence has been known since
ancient time. The volcano today is "non active".
